BENEDICT TEST FOR REDUCING AND
NON-REDUCING SUGAR

Aim:
To know which one is the reducing sugar, which one is not

Hypothesis:
Benedict can be use as the indicator to know it’s reducing sugar or not. All of
them have reducing sugar except the starch and sucrose non hydrolyzed. It can
be show by the change of the color.

Background
Theory: Sugar is something that we need in our body to resume our life, and do
our activity. In this experiment we try to know is the reducing sugar present
or not. We test sucrose that had been hydrolyzed and not, glucose, starch, and
water. We try to know is it reducing sugar or not, by add 10 drops of
benedicts.

Procedure:

Analysis
& Discussion:
A reducing sugar is a carbohydrate that
can be oxidized by a weak agent. During the test with Benedict solution, the
color will be change from blue to other color, such as brown, orange, and many
more..
Sugar has 2 types of sugar,
reducing sugar and non-reducing sugar. It’s can be know by Benedict solution
test.
Non-reducing sugars don’t have an aldehyde group - the reducing species. It will not change the color of benedict solution, blue.

Conclusion:
Benedict can be use as the indicator to know it’s reducing sugar or not.
